Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) Assessments Adelaide

Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL’s) refer to the more complex tasks necessary for an individual to live independently and manage daily life effectively. Unlike personal Activities of Daily Living (PADLs), which involve essential self-care tasks (e.g., bathing, dressing, eating), IADLs typically require higher-level cognitive, organisational, and physical functioning. These tasks are often necessary for community living and maintaining independence at home. IADL tasks include;

  • Cooking
  • Household Management e.g. cleaning, laundry and maintaining the home
  • Medication Management
  • Gardening
  • Shopping
  • Transportation
  • Financial Management

We can assess the way an individual completes these tasks and review the physical, cognitive and environmental aspects that may impact performance of the tasks.

The assessment involves demonstrating how these tasks are performed within the normal environment. We can then provide recommendations of ways to make the activity as safe as possible and promote independence.
